Horseback Riding in Forest Hills

A lot of hoopla was given to the recent closing of a Manhattan riding school. Fortunately, for us mortals in Queens, there is still plenty of opportunity to ride locally.

Lynne’s Riding School is a great stable, that allows access to the horse trails of nearby Forest Park. I took my first riding lesson there a few weeks ago. More importantly, my 3 1/2 year old son Jack takes short 15 minute lessons on a weekly basis. We found the riding school by attending a friend’s birthday party. With three well-behaved ponies, a dozen kids, and an hour of riding time, everyone got plenty of time to ride around the indoor riding ring.

When Jack was almost three years old, he took a pony ride at the Queens Farm Halloween Festival and hated it (though he loved the rest of the festival). It was too crowded and busy and he was too young. But half a year makes a big difference. His lessons, which are really just pony rides with a smidge of instruction thrown in, are the highlight of his week.

So if you are looking to do something fun, go for a horsey ride.
